NFF announces restructure plans 22 Jun 2004
The National Farmers’ Federation today unanimously agreed to a major restructure that will ensure the peak national farm organisation, which this year celebrates its 25th Anniversary, remains a potent force for Australian farmers in the future.
NFF President, Mr Peter Corish said today that he was delighted at the strength of support for the restructuring and thanked member organisations for their agreement to the restructuring. “Today’s timely decision is the most significant change to the structure of NFF since it was formed in July, 1979 to provide farmers with a single voice at the national level,” Mr Corish said. “One of the key planks of the new structure will be the creation of an NFF Trust to deal with membership subscriptions and the raising of revenue from external sources,” Mr Corish said. “Under the new structure, NFF will also have a Policy Council that will have full responsibility for NFF’s policy agenda and a separate Board which will take care of corporate governance issues. This separation of the Policy Council from the Board will give us more efficient corporate governance and give our members greater equity in policy determination.”
Mr Corish said the restructure plans approved by NFF Council today were the culmination of a review of NFF’s structure which was undertaken in 2003 by consultant David Trebeck, of ACIL. NFF instigated the review and later established a steering committee to further develop the recommendations of the Trebeck Review. “The restructure process has involved a high level of consultation by NFF with our various State and Commodity member organisations to ensure that their needs and concerns were addressed by the final proposal which was put to Council,” Mr Corish said.
“As we celebrate our 25th Anniversary this year, it is fitting that we have made a decision to restructure NFF to ensure the organisation continues to be a strong and vital force for Australian farmers into the future as it has been for the past quarter of a century.”
