Who is the best young farmer in Australia?
22 Jun 2004

Four states, eight young farmers, one day of competition. Who has the skills and determination to bring home to their State the coveted title of Australian Rural Youth National Young Farmer of the Year?

The Australian Rural Youth National Young Farmer of the Year Competition will be held on 12th July 2004 at Dalby Agricultural College, Queensland.

The National Young Farmer of the Year Competition will bring together the best young farmers for a day long competition of practical and theoretical aspects of Australian farming. The competition in previous years has provided an exciting day of interstate rivalry.

Last years winner Mr Shayne Smith, 24, from Dumbleyung, Western Australia said “It was a fantastic honor to win the title and I considered the competition to be a great opportunity to personally challenge myself against the nation’s best”.

Mr Smith has had a busy year as the 2003 National Champion with many offers to attend and speak at events. He still found time to take a trip to Canberra for the Young Rural Leaders course in October 2003 as part of the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry’s sponsorship.

Entry to the national competition is gained through qualifying at the State level competitions, which are organized by state-based rural youth and young farmer organisations. Entry is open to anyone with a keen interest in agriculture from the age of 15-30.

This year’s competition will cover modules such as chemical handling, first aid, mechanical, business management, occupational health and safety, fencing, conservation farming and information technology.

Australian Rural Youth (ARY) National President, Jackie Hull, described the 2004 National Young Farmer of the Year competition as a strong competition this year, “The participants in this year’s competition are highly motivated and have been working and studying hard since winning their State competition – this should provide an exciting and close competition. The competition will also provide an exciting opportunity for all participants – they will become ambassadors for young rural Australians and share in a terrific prize pool.”

Competitors in the 2004 National Young Farmer of the Year Competition will have the chance to share in cash and prizes worth in excess of $10,000. The winner will also receive a travel voucher to attend major event sponsors the Department of Agriculture Fisheries and Forestry (AFFA) official functions as the Young Farmer Ambassador.
