$1bn bill to buy land for SE Queensland dams 9 May 2006
The cost of house and land resumptions for two mega-dams in southeast Queensland could hit $1 billion. The state government announced last month that two dams would be built in the hinterlands of the Gold Coast, south of Brisbane, and the Sunshine Coast, to the north. Premier Peter Beattie said the decision to build the dams had been made, although the government still needed to make a final choice of site for the dam inland from the Gold Coast and needed to undertake final geological examinations on the Sunshine Coast. The proposed north site is in the Traveston district along the Mary River, northwest of Noosa, and could affect the farming towns of Kandanga and Imbil. The dam in the south is to be built along the upper reaches of the Logan River, either at Wyaralong Dam or at Tilleys Bridge, near Rathdowney.
