Hope on Japan beef sales 25 Mar 2003
A new report from Meat and Livestock Australia suggests that export sales of Australian beef to the Japanese market could improve at the expense of US market.
There are increasing signs of better prices in Japan, the MLA report says. The Japanese market for Australian beef has been hit hard over the past 18 months, with exports declining by nearly 40 per cent, as fears over possible BSE contamination took hold on sales.
Japan has been Australia's second largest market for its beef, after the US. But the MLA report says a softer US market and a recovery in Japanese demand may mean Japan is the best place for our beef in the next few months.
