Tougher SA laws to protect Murray River 25 Mar 2003
Tougher laws to protect the Murray River have been introduced into the South Australian Parliament. The River Murray Bill will give the State Minister John Hill unprecedented powers to intervene on unsustainable practices or activities, with intervention rights over 20 pieces of legislation relating to soil and native vegetation disturbance, irrigation, aquaculture and fishing, mining and other activities that may harm the river. Mr Hill said the new laws would condense various approval processes into one focal point.
The boost in protection powers may come too late however to save a large number of red river gums on floodplains surrounding the river from dying due to lack of water. Mr Hill said also a second dredge would be brought in to help open another channel from the Coorong to the sea, as the initial dredging at the Murray Mouth did not work as well as hoped.
