Pig poo could produce pork power
26 Mar 2003

Australian Pork Ltd has received a $150,000 grant from the Federal Government to examine ways of turning pig manure into electricity. Pig manure will be mixed with water to produce biogas, which can then either be burnt directly for heating or used for power.

The research will be carried out in piggeries across Australia. Some small-scale biogas plants have already been trialled in dairies and piggeries, aiming to cut odour and produce power.

The Federal Agriculture Minister said the project would not only bring environmental benefits but also an economic boost to the pig industry.

A firm time-frame for the project has yet to be established.
