Bid to ban trade in live export
13 Aug 2003

The Democrats have introduced a National Animal Welfare Bill in the Senate. The Bill seeks to set up a National Animal Welfare Authority and among other proposals would ban the $1 billion-a-year live exports trade. This was prompted by the agreement of the Federal Government to investigate the trade after a vet on a TV program claimed mortality rates on ships were deliberately manipulated two years ago.

Farmers said they did not support the Bill. Cattle Council of Australia president Keith Adams said a ban is not needed because measures have been put in place to prevent the high mortality rates which occurred on board some live export shipments in 2002.

Herald Sun, 12/8/03, page 14.
