Feedlot industry attacks subsidies for ethanol 14 Aug 2003
Australia's $3 billion feedlot industry has criticised the Federal Government's subsidies to ethanol company Manildra and claims it will double grain prices. The Red Meat Advisory Council has written to senior ministers protesting against the ethanol subsidies, while the Australian Lot Feeders Association says the government assistance program "comes as an almighty blow to our sustainability".
Ethanol can be produced from a variety of sources, including sugar, but Manildra uses grain. Livestock producers believe the subsidy will deliver Manildra around $152 a tonne in extra buying power over grain stocks which are scarce. This would lead to a doubling of grain prices in a non-drought year.
