Pork producers back importer levy
14 Aug 2003

Australian pork producers have welcomed a move to impose a voluntary levy on pork importers to help fund domestic pork promotion. About a third of all pork sold in Australia is imported but local producers bear the costs alone of promoting it. They pay a national slaughter levy of $1.65 per pig, which raised $8.5 million for the "Juicy, Tender Pork" campaign launched earlier in 2003.

At the request of Australian Pork Ltd, Federal Agriculture Minister Warren Truss has written to pork importers, asking for contributions to a voluntary promotion levy, which could raise an extra $1 million a year for local pork marketing. If the voluntary levy does not get support from importers, the Government may consider a compulsory one.

Queensland Country Life, 14/8/03.
