Police raid makes duffers of organised cattle rustling ring
15 Aug 2003

Police in central western New South Wales have seized more than $1 million worth of cattle in what is described as the biggest-ever haul. More than 1,500 cattle, mostly Herefords, were found on stock routes in the Coonamble, Warren and Carinda area after police received information that they were being mustered by thieves.

Police may use DNA to identify the cattle origins if they are unable to determine where they were taken from: some have parts of their ears taken off, others still have tags. The cattle are expected to be returned to their owners.

Anyone who owns or runs a cattle farm in the area should carry out an audit of all stock and immediately report any theft to the nearest police station.
