Legislation takes raw milk off shelf 19 Aug 2003
New legislation in Queensland will ban the sale of unpasteurised milk. The law will outlaw operations like that of Gympie district dairy farmer Trevor Mahaffey whose jersey cows produce Cleopatra's Bath Milk, which is sold in health shops in Brisbane and on the Sunshine Coast.
The changes will also close a loophole which allows people who share ownership of dairy cows to drink raw milk. The exemption for primary producers will continue, but an amendment bans removal of the milk from the farm where it is produced.
According to Mr Mahaffey, heating milk as part of the pasteurisation process destroys vitamins and enzymes. But his arguments have failed to convince Queensland's Primary Industries Minister, Henry Palaszczuk, who said national standards require milk for human consumption to be pasteurised.
