Vic forests to be logged
22 Aug 2003

Victorian forests destroyed by the Summer bushfires will be logged and replanted. Seeding will complement the logging to regenerate alpine ash forests, but trees in national parks destroyed by the fire will not be logged.

Areas to be harvested have been earmarked already for logging. The State Government will gain $10 million in royalties from the harvest, which will produce 1.5 million cubic metres of timber. Logs will be stockpiled for up to six years to avoid a market glut.

Forestry Victoria said timber in burned trees would start cracking within two years if left alone. Less than 12,000ha of forests in north eastern Victoria and east Gippsland could be salvaged.

Herald Sun, 22/8/03.
