Dairy products fight colon cancer 26 Aug 2003
A diet rich in dairy products has been linked to reducing the risk of colon cancer, according to a CSIRO scientist who was speaking at a food research conference on August 25. Colon cancer is the third most common type of cancer in Australia but dairy products which contain high levels of the trace element selenium help to prevent colon cancer. Selenium is an element found in some plants. A CSIRO research team found that rats fed dairy products high in selenium showed a reduced risk of developing colon cancer.
But the scientist also warned that the level of selenium in Australian dairy products has reduced, due to factors including changes in agricultural techniques. Levels of this element in dairy products can, however, be boosted by supplementing the diet of cattle with selenium.
