Gum offers sweet scent of success 27 Aug 2003
Sugar gum - once regarded as just good firewood - is becoming very popular with Australia's furniture makers and architects. The dense honey-coloured timber is being used in handcrafted furniture and architect-designed homes, and is proving to be more than a match for elite timbers such as kauri and mahogany.
Sugar gums offer farmers in low-rainfall areas a viable alternative in agro-forestry. The traditional home of the sugar gum is the Western District of Victoria, around Lismore, and farmers in the area are planning to put this little-known timber on the map. A timber-growing co-operative called SMARTimbers has been established by a local, Andrew Lang, and is spreading the word about sugar gum and its uses in flooring, panelling and furniture.
