Rabbit vaccine 'will hurt Australian farmers'
28 Aug 2003

Spanish scientists are working on a genetically modified organism (GMO) to vaccinate rabbits against myxomatosis and calicivirus, which could have devastating consequences for Australian farmers. There is no guarantee that the GMO will not eventually find its way to Australia.

The Spanish project was reported in the magazine "New Scientist", which stated that the arrival of the Spanish virus in Australia would be a disaster, allowing rabbit populations to boom.

Although rabbits are a pest in Australia, they are an important food source for the Spanish imperial eagle and the Iberian lynx. The article said government approval processes did not adequately consider the impact GMOs could have on other countries.
