How farmers are affected by WTO trade talks' collapse
16 Sep 2003

International agricultural industry reform, vital for Australian farmers, will now be delayed for another 12 months, after the World Trade Organisation's ministerial meeting in Cancun, Mexico, collapsed.

Australian farmers wanted to see cuts in tariffs on a range of agricultural exports, particularly to Europe, the United States and Japan. There were hopes that a framework would be put in place which would gradually phase out massive subsidies, worth an estimated $500 billion, which reduce the cost of production for Australia's overseas competitors and make it hard for Australian exporters to compete. Farmers were also seeking the removal of quotas which restrict the amount of produce Australia can export.
