Thumbs down to GM food guide 17 Sep 2003
A consumer guide to genetically modified food, published by Greenpeace, is misleading and should be ignored, says the Victorian Farmers' Federation. The "True Food Guide" rates food companies on their policies for including GM ingredients in their products.
The guide gives green ticks for being GE-free, red marks for having no policy or not responding to the survey, and orange marks for "moving to GE-free status but not yet achieved".
Companies given green ticks included Dairy Farmers, National Foods, Tip Top and Sanitarium. Red marks went to SPC Ardmona, Bonlac and Goodman Fielder. Orange ticks included Murray Goulburn's Devondale range of products.
The VFF says many foods were given the thumbs down just because their companies refused to answer Greenpeace's survey.
