Macadamia nut power switched on
19 Sep 2003

The world's first macadamia nut-fuelled power plant has been opened at Gympie in Queensland. The $3 million "green power" Macadamia Cogeneration Facility will convert 1,680 kilograms of discarded shells every hour into 1.5 megawatts of electricity. It will power up to 1,200 Queensland homes in its first year, with 80 per cent of the power generated exported to the national electricity grid.

Within the next two years the facility is expected to double its output by using 10,000 tonnes of waste shells. The plant is a joint venture between Gympie-based Suncoast Gold Macadamias company, the world's third-largest producer of the nuts, and Queensland Government-owned Ergon Energy. In its first year of operation the facility will reduce greenhouse gases by about 9,500 tonnes.
