Unwanted sheep carrier docks for feed 19 Sep 2003
The Cormo Express has been allowed to dock at a United Arab Emirates port to take on feed for its live cargo of over 50,000 sheep, but only after the ship's authorities argued for 24 hours with UAE officials. The UAE will not allow the sheep to be unloaded. Negotiations are ongoing to find a port to unload the sheep, which are steaming around in temperatures of 30C to 50C. They have been rejected by at least three Middle Eastern countries, including Saudi Arabia and the UAE.
It is believed about 4,000 sheep have died, but Agriculture Minister Warren Truss has only confirmed the deaths of 1,100. The Government has decided it's not in the public interest to disclose the precise numbers that have died. On Wednesday, a motion was passed in the Senate asking the Government to provide details of how many sheep had perished.
