Telstra sale less likely 22 Sep 2003
Rural telecommunication services are unlikely to have improved enough for the Coalition Government to sell its stake in Telstra before the next federal election, the Deputy Prime Minister, John Anderson, says.
He said it would not matter if an election were held in three months or 18 months, as country phone services are unlikely to be "up to scratch". The Government has only recently implemented its latest plan to address and resolve the problems.
Mr Anderson said he wanted to be able to "look people in the eye and say the gap's been closed" before the Telstra stake is sold, and he doesn't think the Government will have reached that point by the time of the next election.
The Federal Government has promised to bring rural telecommunication services up to the levels of metropolitan areas before it sells its remaining 50.1 per cent stake in Telstra.
