One vet, one bolt gun, few options on 'ship of shame'
22 Sep 2003

There is one vet with one bolt gun aboard the Cormo Express, with only enough charges to kill one-tenth of the 50,000-plus sheep on board. The sheep do not have enough room to lie down and are standing in urine and manure. The ship has only been cleaned twice since it left Australia seven weeks ago.

Animals Australia is calling for immediate slaughter of the sheep still alive as "the best of a terrible lot of options".

The Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry says the vet has five roles: to check the animals' health daily, draft the sheep into pens, put down animals that aren't coping, conduct post-mortems and ensure crew are tending to animals.

To deal with the current situation, extra bolt pistols, skilled workers and vets would have to be flown to the Cormo Express to dispose of the sheep at sea.
