Wool needs a plan for Japan: report 23 Sep 2003
A new report, commissioned by Australian Wool Innovation and written by the Australia-Japan Research Centre, concludes that the Australian wool industry should set up an organisation in Japan to regain the millions of dollars in trade lost there over the past 10 years.
The report also recommends attacking the trade barriers, with the first target being to reduce tariffs on wool product imports into Japan.
The value of raw wool and wool tops going into Japan has fallen from $US422 million in 1994 to $US40 million in 2001, which far exceeds the decrease in the value of all Australian wool exports.
Japan's per capita consumption of wool products has decreased by 40 per cent since 1995, due to changes in demand and in the processing, manufacturing and distribution chain. Most manufacturing for the Japanese market now takes place in China, and the tariffs rise for products into Japan as the amount of offshore processing increases.
