Super roo Lulu a real lifesaver
23 Sep 2003

Gippsland farmer Len Richards owes his life to his pet kangaroo Lulu, who alerted the family after he was badly hurt by a falling tree branch. Mr Richards was knocked unconscious and Lulu stood guard over him and "barked" like a dog until she got the family's attention. They went to investigate and found Lulu standing upright with her chest puffed out over Mr Richards' body.

Mr Richards had been checking a tree in a paddock about 300m from the house when he was struck by a falling branch and knocked out. He was later taken to the Alfred Hospital with head injuries and was released last night.

The family credits Lulu with saving Mr Richards' life and says she "knew exactly what she was doing". A Rural Ambulance Service spokesman said the farmer was in a life-threatening condition and could have died had it not been for the clever kangaroo. Mr Richards remembers nothing of the incident but says now that Lulu will get a whole box of her favourite Teddy Bear biscuits.

RSPCA president Hugh Wirth says the family should nominate Lulu for a national bravery award. One-eyed Lulu, a western grey, was adopted by the family when found in her dead mother's pouch 10 years ago but is still a bush kangaroo at heart.
