Vic Govt's farm work permit claim rejected 24 Sep 2003
Accident researchers, WorkCover investigators and a doctor have dismissed Victorian Government claims that its Child Employment legislation would reduce deaths and injuries on farms.
Monash University's Accident Research Centre surveys show that over 80 per cent of children injured do so when engaged in recreational activities, not work. A senior researcher said that any permit or surveillance system would not affect injury rates significantly.
WorkCover field staff agreed and said work permits for children on farms would do little, if anything, to improve farm safety. Greg Keogh, a doctor based in Kerang who was instrumental in producing the 1999 "Danger on our Farms" survey, said the work permit proposal sounds "impractical".
