Mice threaten Darling Downs grain crops 24 Sep 2003
Darling Downs grain growers fortunate enough to have planted a winter grain crop are now facing a mouse problem. Increasing numbers of mice are being reported, particularly in the Mount Tyson area where wheat and barley crops are nearing harvest.
Queensland's Department of Natural Resources is warning growers to keep a look-out for mouse activity and crop damage. Rodent zoologist Julianne Farrell said mice have the ability to seriously cut yields and their activity should be monitored and acted on. Ms Farrell also said it's difficult to predict what mouse populations will do as their survival and breeding depends on environmental factors.
One farmer said mice populations usually build in September but this year they've hit early. He has been setting baits for over a month already.
