Cheap satellite phones for bush 25 Sep 2003
Telstra is believed to be close to signing a deal with Tele-IP which will see solar-powered phones using satellite technology supplied to remote and rural areas. The order is reportedly for about 200 of the phones, which look and work like normal telephones and use Iridium's satellite network.
The equipment will probably be provided temporarily to customers in remote areas while a fixed line is installed. The phones may also be used in emergencies like floods or fires.
The charges will be the same as for untimed fixed-line local calls. Tele-IP's technology means people won't have to dial international country codes when making calls. Usually, making a satellite call to a local number in Australia entails dialling 0011 61.
