Watchdog slated for animal exports 29 Sep 2003
Australia's live animal export industry is likely to get an independent regulatory body, created by the Federal Government, as the shipment of over 50,000 sheep remain stranded in the Persian Gulf. The Agriculture Minister, Warren Truss, said the current system, under which regulation is shared between Livecorp, the Australian Quarantine & Inspection Service and Australian Maritime Safety Authority, will be abolished.
Livecorp's regulatory powers would be stripped and a new separate organisation created to assume that role.
The announcement came as Mr Truss played down reports that the stranded sheep would be unloaded in Iraq. He said talks are continuing with several countries.
The overhaul of the live export industry was announced as the RSPCA and other animal welfare groups severely criticised the Government's handling of the situation.
