Kuwait in queue to take sheep 30 Sep 2003
Kuwait is reportedly emerging as the new frontrunner ahead of Iraq and Libya as a taker for 53,000 sheep stranded in the Persian Gulf. But a definite resolution to the situation is still evading a group of government and private sector negotiators.
Australian livestock exporters have taken effective control of the sheep, although no money has exchanged hands with the Saudi buyer. An agreement is in place for some payment from the industry to the importer so that arrangements can be made for the sheep to be offloaded to a third party, on a date undetermined, a LiveCorp spokesman said on September 29.
Australian Government sources have confirmed that Libya, the United Arab Emirates and Bahrain have all declared an interest in taking the sheep.
Sydney exporter Mark Coultan said Australian negotiators are now in talks with Kuwait. They want to unload them there because they don't want to get shot at in Iraq, Mr Coultan said. But Iraq is still on the list and is still the most likely option, government sources said.
