Vic animal laws shock
15 Oct 2003

The Victorian Agriculture Minister, Bob Cameron, will be granted sweeping new powers under animal welfare legislation to be introduced into parliament this week. The Bill amends five Acts that give the minister the power to prohibit or regulate certain veterinary or medical procedures.

Victorian Farmers' Federation animal welfare committee chair Meg Parkinson said she believed the Bill would give Mr Cameron the power to ban activities such as mulesing, calving induction, tail docking and rabbit trapping.

Peak dairy and pork industry groups say they haven't been consulted on the Bill and were surprised it had already been drafted and gone to Cabinet. The amendment has implications for the dairy industry practice of inducing calving, which is used to bring late-calving cows into line with the rest of the herd.
