Wild dogs given the beep
17 Oct 2003

High-frequency beepers will be trialled along the 2,545 kilometres of Queensland's wild dog barrier fence to discourage the dogs from going near it. The beepers, which are solar-powered, were designed by Queensland company Shoo Roo. They are activated by heat and movement, then emit a high-pitched pulse every 15 to 20 seconds.

Queensland's Natural Resources Minister, Stephen Robertson, said the dogs' ears are very sensitive and they will be put off from going near the pulse. The beepers will be strategically placed at cattle grid entrances along the fence, in places identified as problem areas for dog penetration. The trial areas will be in the Murweh, Chinchilla and Booringa shires.
