Wine, food markets win in Thai trade deal 20 Oct 2003
Australia's wine and farm sectors, processed food and car makers will benefit from a free trade deal struck on October 19 between Australia and Thailand. The agreement will eliminate 50 per cent of Thailand's 6,000 tariffs on Australian goods worth about $700 million a year. Tariff cuts will begin in late 2004 or early 2005 and be almost completely phased out by 2010.
Wine tariffs will be reduced by more than 15 per cent, while there will be substantially greater access in Thailand for Australian dairy products. Elimination of high tariffs in other sectors include wheat and grains, bakery products and processed foods. There will be additional access for Australian beef and pork, as well as key fruit and vegetable exports. Tariffs on exports such as wool, cotton, lead, zinc, aluminium and some steel products will be eliminated immediately. Thailand's 80 per cent tariff on large passenger vehicles will be removed and there will be an immediate reduction by 50 per cent on medium-sized passenger vehicles.
