Irrigators to get Murray allocation top-up
21 Oct 2003

River Murray irrigators will get another 10 per cent of their water allocation this season. SA's River Murray Minister John Hill announced on October 20 that irrigators would be able to use up to 85 per cent of their allocation. And if conditions in the Murray-Darling Basin improve further, irrigators may receive even more water, Mr Hill suggested. He said River Murray irrigators had a "pretty hard way to start this season“, with just a portion of their high-security water allocation guaranteed due to the drought.

Mr Hill said the outlook for River Murray water supply in summer had improved due to late winter rains. These rains prompted a decision by the SA Department of Water, Land and Biodiversity Conservation to restore another 10 per cent to 3,700 River Murray irrigators - who only received 65 per cent of their water in July 2003. In September, they also won back another 10 per cent.
