Farmers seek wage relief
21 Oct 2003

The National Farmers' Federation has put forward a proposal that farmers who are relying on federal drought assistance to get by would not have to give their workers a pay increase. The NFF's industrial committee chairman said farmers on Exceptional Circumstances aid need relief from having to pay their workers extra. More than 8,000 agricultural jobs were lost during the drought and farmers need a buffer at a time when they are seeking to rebuild their businesses and reinstate farm labour.

The case is due to go to the Industrial Relations Commission on November 7. In the application five farmers are included. If this is successful, the NFF will support more applications.
