Ethanol subsidy bad policy: Labor
21 Oct 2003

The ethanol subsidy, worth $195 million over four years, is very bad policy and the funding should be directed elsewhere, says Opposition finance spokesman Bob McMullan. He said even rural people are complaining about effects of the ethanol subsidy. The regional communities are complaining that this subsidy is, for example, doing very bad things for the beef industry, the feedlot industry, because it is artificially distorting the grain market and making it much harder for country people, he said in a radio interview. The Red Meat Advisory Council is unanimously opposed to the subsidy, he stated.

Mr McMullan said there are regional communities which need assistance but the ethanol subsidy is not the best way.
