Queensland against T3: Democrats 21 Oct 2003
The Australian Democrats claim that 80 per cent of Queenslanders are opposed to any further sell-off of Telstra. The party's communications spokesman John Cherry said that 120,000 survey leaflets had been sent out to people mainly in rural and regional areas, and all four National Party-held electorates. Of the 13,000 responses received, 80 per cent said Telstra should not be sold.
In addition, about 77 per cent said that the Federal Government has not proven that services are up to scratch in the bush. Mr Cherry concluded that telecoms services have a long way to go before the Government can convince country people that selling off Telstra is a good idea.
Mr Cherry confirmed that the results of the Democrats' poll gave similar results to those conducted by Newspoll, other survey organisations and several MPs' polls.
