Telstra in Tasmania, country areas 'falling to bits' 23 Oct 2003
Federal Opposition communications spokesman Lindsay Tanner says the Telstra network is being held together with "bandaids and string, with plastic bags" in Tasmania and many other parts of regional Australia. Mr Tanner said Telstra is already behaving like a private company and neglecting its primary role of providing a high-quality network and a high quality of services all around the country. He produced photographs of Tasmania's "decaying and dilapidated" fixed-line network.
Mr Tanner said since 1999 Telstra has decreased capital investment from $4.7 billion a year to just over $3 billion. In that time, 20,000 jobs have gone, many of these field-workers. He claimed Telstra's network is "falling to bits" in Tasmania and other parts of regional and rural Australia, including northern New South Wales and Queensland.
