Qld Govt charges hit CWA 29 Oct 2003
The Queensland Country Women's Association, the state's largest women's organisation, is facing a financial crisis and may be forced to sell some properties. The crisis has been brought about due to new state charges and regulations.
The QCWA's Brisbane headquarters does not meet fire regulations, about 200 meeting halls around the state are being charged the state ambulance levy on power bills, and the fire regulations also affect two nursing homes run by the QCWA.
Association president Lyn Kelman said nothing could be done about one of the nursing homes as it is heritage-listed and can't be altered. The Brisbane HQ may have to be sold, rather than upgraded to meet fire regulations, due to the cost. Mrs Kelman also said that every one of the QCWA's meeting halls has been hit with the ambulance levy - even when often the electricity bill is only about $15. (Queenslanders pay a $22 levy on their quarterly electricity bills to help fund the ambulance service).
The QCWA will discuss the future of its properties at its annual conference, to be held in Brisbane this week.
