VFF to decide on Grains Council 29 Oct 2003
The Victorian Farmers' Federation is expected to tell the Grains Council of Australia today, at a GCA meeting in Canberra, whether it has decided to remain a member of the organisation or not. The VFF's grains group gave GCA six months' notice in May 2003 that it would end its membership, attempting to force the GCA to make some changes. The reforms sought included greater scrutiny of the wheat single desk, more research efforts and that the GCA seek external funding. Management of the GCA was also criticised, with the VFF looking for the removal of executive director Jock Kreitals. Mr Kreitals resigned early in September 2003.
The six months expires on November 6 and by that date the VFF must make a formal decision. Not all VFF grains council members agreed with the threat to withdraw from the GCA, nor with the way the issue was handled by the grains group executive.
