We love lamb chops
30 Oct 2003

Statistics in the Victorian Meat Authority's annual report show that lamb chops are still the meat lover's favourite. Lamb chops, roasts and racks are more popular than any other kind of red meat in Victoria. However, more unusual meats like venison and goat are increasing in favour.

More than 6.6 million lambs were slaughtered in Victoria in 2002, with 4.7 million of those consumed in Victoria and 1.9 million shipped overseas. The VMA's figures also show that more than 3.4 million sheep, 2.2 million cattle and one million pigs were slaughtered.

Meat and Livestock Australia's trade marketing manager Lachlan Bowtell said there is no doubt that Victorians loved their lamb. Even though NSW produces more lamb, Victorians consume more per head. Mr Bowtell said also that Victorian butchers are becoming more innovative and offering more than just traditional lamb chops.

The Vegetarian Society of Australasia suggested consumers try lentil burgers rather than lamb chops.
