$3.5m for former abattoir workers
31 Oct 2003

Workers at the former Mudgee Regional Abattoir should get $3.5 million in entitlements by the end of November 2003, the NSW Local Government Minister said on October 30. The 250 workers at the former abattoir, which was owned by joint local council, will have their entitlements guaranteed by the Federal Government's general employee entitlements and redundancy scheme.

The Federal Government wanted to be the first creditor paid if the abattoir was sold to pay debts so the NSW Local Government Act was changed to allow this.

The Mudgee abattoir workers will get all their long service leave, holiday pay, all untaken leave, any time in lieu pay and any redundancy pay up to eight weeks.

The abattoir was owned by the Cudgegong (Abattoir) County Council and had been in operation for 36 years. It collapsed in September 2003 owing about $8 million in debts.

The Daily Telegraph, 31/10/03, page 21.
