Farmer alarm at waste plan 13 Nov 2003
Farmers at three potential waste dump sites in Victoria have received letters stating they could lose their land. The State Government has named three sites shortlisted for a dump that will house dry industrial waste from manufacturing such products as cars, clothes, plastics and whitegoods. Only category B waste will be stored at the site. The sites are Tiega, near Ouyen; Baddaginnie, near Benalla; and Pittong, near Ballarat. A final decision on the $200 million dump will not be made for at least a year. It is believed about 15 families received letters.
Baddaginnie sheep farmer Charlie Crocker said he got a hand-delivered letter on November 12 telling him the Government might acquire his property. He said he was "in total shock". The Government wants to buy 800ha of his land, which would leave him with 280ha - effectively useless for his purposes.
Graham Wakefield, a Tiega cereal and sheep farmer, said he was astounded by the "cloak and dagger" news delivery.
Nationals leader Peter Ryan said Victorians should be appalled by the Bracks Government's handling of the issue.
