Raw milk not for sale 13 Nov 2003
The Queensland Dairyfarmers Organisation supports moves by the State Government to stop the sale of raw milk for human consumption. Under the Australia and New Zealand Food Standards Code, all states ban the sale of unpasteurised cow's milk, but some individuals are using loopholes in the Queensland legislation to sell unpasteurised milk for human consumption as beauty products. There are also schemes enabling people to access raw milk by buying shares in milking cows.
National standards that have been set are based on science and abuse of those standards places the community and the industry at risk. The issue is the production of safe food that consumers can continue to have confidence in, both in Australia and in our export markets.
Dairy farmers must meet strict food safety requirements to ensure that consumers get high quality, safe and nutritional dairy products. It's clear that pasteurisation is an essential means of ensuring the safety of dairy products, as established in the FSANZ standards.
