Mudgee abattoir receives interest from six tenders 14 Nov 2003
The Mudgee Regional Abattoir liquidator says several genuine tenders have been received to keep the business operating as a going concern. PPB Chartered Accountants' Steve Parbery says 14 requests for information were received and six sets of tender documents are now being examined. Some of the tenders state they would carry out work on the plant before re-opening.
The abattoir, which had been in operation since 1965 and contributed about $5 million a year to the local economy, was closed in September 2003 after being hit hard by the drought and a fall in product supply. Mr Parbery was later named liquidator. He said on November 13 that $3.6 million has been made available for distribution to the 230 former employees, owed more than $5 million in leave and redundancy payments, under the Federal Government's General Employee Entitlements and Redundancy Scheme. The abattoir is the only export abattoir remaining in Australia that was owned and operated by a local government.
