Country shires' toxic site fightback
14 Nov 2003

Victorian country shires named this week by the State Government as potential sites for a potentially toxic waste dump will fight to keep it out of their areas. The Government named a shortlist which included Baddaginnie, next to Violet Town, Pittong, near Ballarat, and Tiega, near Ouyen.

David Clark, the Pyrenees Shire president, said he was angry that there had been no consultation on the issue, describing it as "the local government Tattslotto". Robin Steers, mayor of Strathbogie Shire which includes Baddaginnie, said the shire is a tourist and rural living destination and the dump is "not compatible with our image".

Herald Sun, 14/11/03, page 11.
