Extra spend on Vic's regional fast rail
18 Nov 2003

The Victorian Government will spend an additional $61 million on the state's regional fast rail project, bringing the total cost to $617 million. The Victorian Transport Minister, Peter Batchelor, said on November 17 that $35 million in extra funding will go to building longer passing loops on the Bendigo line north of Kyneton. The dual track sections will allow trains coming from opposite directions to pass without stopping and trains travelling in the same direction to overtake, he said.

There was strong community opposition to a single track plan and the revised design is a compromise. It will cater for three trains an hour on the line, with an 84-minute express service between Bendigo and Melbourne.

Herald Sun, 18/11/03, page 14.
