Milking it for a career 19 Nov 2003
The National All Dairy Breeds Youth Camp is a five-day initiation welcoming 16 to 20-year-olds to the dairy industry. It's based at the University of Melbourne's Gippsland campus in Warragul.
Up to 50 budding dairy farmers are divided into groups and assigned a calf, which has to be washed, fed, clipped and prepared for a typical show presentation. But the camp, now 10 years old, is about far more than teaching the finer points of handling cattle. For many it's a stepping stone into a dairy career, whether it's dairy farming, working in the show and sales, or consulting.
The camp has gained a lot of interest with its "youth leading youth" concept. Many past participants now have jobs in the industry and credit the camp as being a stepping-stone towards their careers. One of the biggest success stories is Tanya Allen, 23, of Leongatha, who was recently awarded the Victorian Rural Ambassador Award and a $10,000 prize.
The National All Dairy Breeds Youth Camp costs $150 per person and starts on January 5, 2004. Application forms are available by calling 1800 651 934.
