Ord River region still has potential 28 May 2004
Speaking at the launch of research commissioned by the Farmhand Foundation, Deputy Prime Minister John Anderson said that areas where water is more plentiful should be targeted for further development, such as the Ord River Region in Australia’s far north west. The irrigation scheme, which was launched more than 30 years ago, is considered to have only reached a fraction of its potential.
Some progress has been made with water rights reforms in NSW. Mr Anderson said that changes already going through NSW parliament to give entitlements in perpetuity will vastly improve the problem of over-allocation.
At next month’s Council of Australia Government’s meeting the states will be asked to sign up to the federal government’s water management initiative. This is hoped to improve co-operation and help to resolve problems in the Murray-Darling basin.
