Creating a buzz to beat honey crisis 31 May 2004
South Australian beekeepers are urging honey-lovers to buy only 100 per cent Australian honey, due to concerns about imported honey containing dangerous residues of nitrofuran, an illegal antibiotic. Although Food Standards Australia New Zealand has deemed the honey to be safe enough for sale, reports that nitrofuran can cause some sorts of cancer have reduced demand. FSANZ says there’s no scientific evidence to link nitrofuran to cancer and its risk assessment of the imported honey showed only low levels of the antibiotic.
But beekeepers believe the only way they can increase demand for honey is to emphasise the “naturalness” of the Australian product. One apiarist said Australian honey is free of heavy metals, pesticides and chemicals. Australian bees are recognised as among the cleanest in the world for diseases.
