Wineries in a bunch of trouble 16 Jun 2004
Up to half of Australia's 1,500 small wineries are at risk of financial extinction, according to a report by Deloitte and the Winemakers' Federation. The study found that wineries of all sizes recorded losses for the 2003 financial year but the youngest smaller wineries, with turnover between $1 million and $5 million, were at most risk. Most haven't had time to build brands, distribution systems or business plans.
The Deloitte-WFA report gave some tips for small wineries to ride out the current downturn, including focusing on niche markets where brands could be developed; not competing with industry giants such as Southcorp, Orlando Wyndham and Beringer Blass; aggressively developing mail-order businesses and cellar-door operations where possible.
