Record price for Ballarat lambs 16 Jun 2004
A record price $171 was set yesterday at Ballarat for a pen of 45 extra-heavy, five-score lambs, weighing about 35kg. The 11 to 12-month-old lambs, with an estimated $20 skin, were owned by David Baird of Learmonth and sold by TB White & Sons to T&R of Murray Bridge, South Australia.
Prices increased overall, with most classes averaging increases of $5-$8 a head, for a total of 13,000 lambs.
The National Livestock Reporting Service said a shortage of lambs had contributed to increased demand, with good skin prices, the dollar going down and no sale at Bendigo due to the public holiday all helping.
The Ballarat record price came after a pen of 50 White Suffolk-cross lambs fetched $168 at Griffith in May. Those lambs had an estimated carcass weight of 35kg and a $20 skin.
